Jersey One World Group

Why Jersey One World Centre?

Many national and international agencies and interest groups are represented in Jersey, such as OXFAM, Christian Aid, CAFOD, Fairtrade, Amnesty International, the Soil Association and Greenpeace. In addition, the island is blessed with a host of home-grown groups whose hard work is directed at specific projects in local communities around the world.

The One World Centre aims to bring these various groups together so that they can present themselves more effectively to the public, to encourage support and participation.

The Centre acts as a meeting point and resource centre for all these groups as well as for teachers, schoolchildren and individuals; indeed, anyone who is concerned about global issues ranging from the alleviation of poverty in developing countries to climate change.

Through the Centre, the One World Group aims to raise awareness of such issues before both the public and the States of Jersey so that they are better understood and supported.

About The Jersey One World Centre

Till July 2009, the Jersey One World Centre occupied a classroom in the former La Pouquelaye School in St Helier. So far, all our efforts have been carried out on a purely voluntary basis.

From July 2009, thanks to a generous grant from a local trust we are able to rent an office in the Town Hall, Seale St entrance.

The room is equipped with a central table and chairs for committee meetings, a laptop computer and printer, DVD and video players  and a library of over 100 books and other resources for school.   Back copies are kept of magazines such as 'New Internationalist and Developments.  There is a  filing cabinet  full of information on a wide range of topics organised under relevant headings.

Anyone is free to contribute to the Centre’s resources and to make use of them.

We welcome help in organising our resources, preparing educational materials, compiling databases, issuing a regular newsletter and lots more.

The Centre has restricted opening hours  so please call  Ed on 730131 to check availability.

From September 2009 employed Mrs Lucy Layton for 3 hours per week to make contact with primary schools, to help teachers with materials to use in the curriculum and to take assemblies from time to time.  She did some excellent work but moved on in July 2011    From October 1st, our Education Officer is Harriet Safe, who will be making herself known in primary schools.   Her contact is hazsafe@hotmail.com

However our lease ends on December 31st, 2011 and we shall be on the move again.
