Amnesty International Jersey Group
Amnesty International (known as Amnesty or AI) is an international, non-governmental organization with the stated purpose of promoting all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. In particular, Amnesty International campaigns:
- to free all prisoners of conscience;
- to ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners;
- to abolish the death penalty, torture, and other treatment of prisoners it regards as cruel;
- to end political killings and forced disappearances;
- to oppose all human rights abuses, whether by governments or by other groups.
The Jersey group has been active since 1977, when it was founded by Jack Le Quesne and Ann Frost. Amnesty International Jersey Section is 31 years old, & is a vibrant, creative, and 'buzzing' group of people of all ages who are actively involved in campaigning, awareness-raising, letter writing, and fund-raising – at this year's AIUK National Conference we won TWO AWARDS, which was a first for a local group.
The group is run by a small committee, which emails a regular newsletter to members, with news about local campaigning and fundraising events, and with emails or letters ready for members to send to governments on behalf of torture sufferers and prisoners of conscience, and those under threat of execution. We hold an annual Human Rights Film Festival in October and an annual 'Tour de Freedom' Cycle Ride in May, as well as other events throughout the year.
