Help from the Rock

A Jersey registered charity helping developing communities. Member of Association of Jersey Charities Reg No 282. Registered with Jersey Financial Services as an NPO (Reg. 0432).

About Us

This small local charity was initially set up by Dave and Betty Ellis as an account to handle money raised during the initial stages of the Jersey Overseas Aid projects that they were leading. It had become increasingly difficult to open a new account for each project and the intention was that this account would be used for each project and then lay dormant until the next one.

It soon became evident that it had to be registered with Jersey Income tax so that we could benefit from tax refunds on the occasional larger donation. Soon after that we were advised to register with the Association of Jersey Charities and then came the need to Register with the Jersey Financial Services anti money laundering department.

Our accounts have always been overseen by an independent treasurer and audited by a completely separate auditor.

It soon became apparent to us that there was a need for small projects, managed by the beneficiaries in the communities, over and above the main JOAC project so Help From The Rock developed beyond being just a Bank Account and became an active charity, often supporting JOAC projects but also developing projects in its own right..

So far we have:

  • Raised the funds for a borehole in a remote village called Msoro in Zambia.
  • Rebuilt a fire damaged school building in the same village.
  • Set up a school feeding programme in a village called Mifumi in Uganda.
  • Provided books and teaching aids for the school in Mifumi.
  • Provided a generator and submersible pump for the borehole in Mifumi.
  • Rebuilt part of the school and a damaged health clinic in Sohm, Gambia.
  • Helped with the fund raising for a health centre in Nyalkinyi, Kenya.
  • Provided a borehole in Nyalkinyi.
  • Helped to provide a farm to feed children at two schools in Kenya.
  • Trained 3 clinical officers for a village in Kenya.
  • Raised money for the children in an orphanage in Chennai, India.
  • Raised money for two projects for street children in Mongolia (drop in center and free clinic). Projects tend to be between £5000 and £10,000 and in some cases grants have been made by JOAC.
