UPDATE ON SOHM SKILLS CENTRE IN THE GAMBIA, July 2010
In order to receive funding from the State Department for Education in The Gambia, in the form of Basic Salaries for the Teaching Staff, we were asked to change the name of the Skills Centre. After a meeting with the Secretary of State for Education, we agreed in principle to change the name to Sohm Senior Secondary Technical Institute. We hoped this would take place at the beginning of the beginning of the Academic year in September 2008. This did not happen as planned! A Board of Governors meeting was held in March 2009, when it was suggested by the Regional Education Office that the name should be changed to Jersey Technical Senior Secondary School. This was approved by the Board, who appointed a new Principal to take over from Mr. Sanyang. The changeover from the Jersey Sohm Skills Centre to Jersey Technical Senior Secondary School went well and in September 2009 we had the first intake of Grade 10 Students, plus a few new students for the Skills Centre side of the operation. We now have 90+ students at the School. The new Principal, Mr. Momodou Saye, is very forward looking and has been a great help to us during the changeover. He has successfully negotiated with the Department of Education for the payment of the salaries for the Teaching Staff, including our own Skills Centre teachers. Hopefully, we will pay for our last delivery of diesel for the generator in the near future, as Mr. Saye said that the income from fees should be enough to cover this cost from September 2010 . There is now a need to build another classroom block to house a Science Laboratory, 2 general classrooms and, importantly, a Staff Common Room.
A new signboard for the School has been erected on the main road, designed by Mr. Saye and Mr. Landing Sanyang
Our eighth container was successfully dispatched, and arrived safely in August 2009. We are now in the process of filling our ninth container.
Our Website is still under construction, but we hope to be on line soon.
