The Ngora Trust was founded in April 2004 by a group of volunteers from a Jersey Overseas Aid Community Work Project team who had visited the village of Ngora in Kumi District, Eastern Uganda in May 2003. The project involved the rehabilitation of a rural health clinic and maternity ward and on their return to Jersey the team agreed to continue supporting the local community by further fundraising.
The initiator of the project in Ngora was Professor Francis Omaswa, formerly Director General of Health Services in Uganda now working for UNESCO in Geneva, who originates from this district.
The Ngora Trust channels funds through local contacts in Ngora under the auspices of the St Joseph’s Development Fund, PO Box 50, Ngora, Uganda and the Father John Kiggen Memorial College of the Soroti Catholic Diocese, who provide regular reports to the Trust giving accountability for the financial support received.
Since 2004 the Trust has raised over £10,000 and has received further match funding grants from the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission. The Trust has provided funds for the following purposes in Ngora:
- Completion of work on the Rural Health Clinic and Maternity Ward
- Renovation of Nurses’ accommodation
- Construction of a Girls’ dormitory accommodation at the Father John Kiggen Memorial College
- Restoration and furnishing of the Community Hall
- Drilling of borehole to supply drinking water for the Father John Kiggen Memorial College
- Construction of perimeter fencing for the College
Update April 2012 by Dennis Troy
Photos show finished Health Buildings, renovated by Alan Cameron and Dennis Troy on their last visit.
£1 fir £1 money from JOAC has been used on the Father John Kiggan Memorial College Dormitory and the upgrade of the Father Borghols Vocation Institute Building.
The Trust has a further £1000 in funds, which hopefully JOAC will match.
Dick Richomme and Dennis Troy are putting together a JOAAC Work Project for early in 2013
