Jersey One World Group
Newsletter no. 15 October 2011
We are facing some big changes in the next few months. We have had confirmation that our lease on the office in Seale St will end on December 31st. The parish intend to turn our office into a baby changing area for this end of town. The office has not become the drop-in centre
for teachers that we first thought. The management committee feel that all we need is an office share with another charity, giving us a workstation with internet access. We would need access from time to time in the day and also after 5 pm. We would also need storage space for the library and the resources for member groups such as Fairtrade, Oxfam and Christian Aid, not necessarily at the same place. Can you suggest any possibilities?
Lucy Layton resigned as our Education Officer in July to return to her previous role at Jersey Heritage. She has made a real impact in her two years in the post. At first we hoped that Phillipa Losh would take the role but her position at Highlands became full time with no free time before 4 pm. Now we have appointed Harriet Safe, who has a Biology degree and a Masters in environmental consultancy. She will be doing 3 hours per week from October 3rd. Over the past few months she has been working in the Educational Dept at Durrell. We wish Harriet well taking our message into primary schools.
One World Week is Oct.23rd to 30th this year, which is halfterm. Jim Hopley has arranged for 5 slots on Radio Jersey with talks from Durrell, Trees for Life, Le Rocquier School and other environmental agencies. The theme is ‘Living for One World‘ (Living for the Planet, for its people and acting for change)
Our topic for 2011 is ‘Forests’. It will be launched at an event on Nov. 23rd, hosted by Ogier in their new building on the Esplanade. We are very fortunate to have Lord Deben, who, as John Selwyn Gummer, was minister for the environment in the UK for many years as our main speaker. We will be inviting senior people from local firms to attend.
We applied to the Bosdet Foundation and the Association of Jersey Charities for funds to continue next year. We were not sufficiently local for the Bosdet Foundation but are hopeful for support from the AJC.
I look forward to your suggestions for a new office base.
