Newsletter no. 8   June 2009        An update with some recent news
We’re on the Move
We have known that our stay at La Pouquelaye was only temporary.  We have now accepted the offer of a room at the Town Hall.   It is in Seale St, the former waiting room for St. Helier Centeniers!  There are 4 other small charities based there in nearby rooms.   We will be paying rent but we are very grateful to a Trust Fund that has given us £5000 that will cover this and also allow us to appoint an Education officer for probably 3 hours per week to promote our work.  The room is smaller than our classroom  but will be adequate  and is much more central.   We hope to have the key of the door shortly and aim to have everything up and running by September.
AGM report
There was a good turnout of over 50 people St. Martin Public Hall on March 26th.   We enjoyed a tea before the official business.  The officers remain as before but Maurice Lakeman has stepped down as a committee member.  The chairman, Elizabeth Donoghue, thanked all who had contributed to a busy year.  The President of Jersey Overseas Aid Commission then spoke about the desperate needs in our world today and his approach to spending the Jersey aid budget.   He feels the bigger struggle will be to retain it at present level, rather than push to increase it.  The AGM ended with a showing of the DVD ‘Sisters on the planet’ produced by Oxfam, which brought a  human face to statistics about the effects of climate change.
Stop the traffik
Plans are going ahead for a big promotion of this initiative in November.   Ruth Dearnley is coming to Jersey on June 25th to advance detailed arrangements.  Representatives of churches and other organisations have been invited to hear the plans at St. Pauls Centre from 5.30 to 6.30  In Nov., there will be presentations in all schools with 6th formers, leading to a Freedom march on Friday lunchtime, Nov. 20th.  We hope that several hundred people will come to Wesley Grove in the evening for a musical event, arranged by Chris George and a talk by Steve Chalke.  The One World Centre has a copy of Steve’s book which gives much detail about traffikng and we hope to hear of progress in ending it, second biggest illegal activity after arms dealing.
Centre facilities
Our telephone number 498936 will transfer to our new home and we retain a broadband connection and an ansaphone.   Our laptop and linked Epson printer will move with us.  Our website at www.jerseyoneworldgroup.org has details of over 100 books, DVDs, videos etc from Christian Aid, Oxfam and others in our library.   We would be pleased to receive further donations of books,DVDs and other materials .
